Google, Yahoo delay search ad partnership

Google Inc and Yahoo Inc have decided to delay implementing a controversial search advertising partnership, Yahoo said on Friday.

"The companies have agreed to a brief delay in implementing this agreement to continue our ongoing discussions with the (U.S.) Department of Justice," Yahoo said in a statement. "We have had discussions with regulators and look forward to responding to their questions about this agreement."

Google issued a similar statement.

"When we announced our advertising agreement with Yahoo in June we agreed to delay its implementation until October to give regulators time to look at the details. As we are still in conversation with the Department of Justice we have agreed to a brief delay in implementing the agreement while those discussions continue," the company said.

The delay was expected to last less than a month, a source familiar with the discussions on the issue told Reuters. "We're still looking at the time frame of October," the source said.

The deal, which allows Google to sell advertising for some of Yahoo's online advertising space, is unpopular with advertisers who fear higher prices. Google's web-search market share widened to 63 percent in August, while Yahoo dropped to 19.6 percent and Microsoft Corp slipped to 8.3 percent, according to comScore Inc.

Bob Liodice, president and CEO of the Association of National Advertisers, said his organization was opposed to the pact. "We're gratified that Google and Yahoo are delaying," he said.

Google uses an algorithm that aims to match consumers with what it says are the most appropriate ads, a formula some advertisers find mysterious and bothersome.

Inflation@7.61%; Cement cos may have to cut prices

At a recent CCEA meet, Finance Minister P Chidambaram while talking of steps taken to control inflation, said, “We have persuaded the steel companies to voluntarily agree to a reduction in steel prices. That is an administrative step. We are in the process of persuading the cement companies to rollback prices. If that succeeds, that will also be an administrative step.”

Citigroup aims to shed $400 billion of assets

Citigroup Inc said on Friday it plans to shed $400 billion of assets within three years and boost revenue by up to 10 percent annually, in a bid to restore profitability after huge losses tied to flagging mortgage and credit markets.

Vikram Pandit, who became chief executive of the largest U.S. bank in December, revealed the plans at a much-anticipated presentation to investors and analysts. He has faced growing demands to slash costs, shed poor-performing businesses, and reinvigorate a stock price down by more than half in the last year.

Citigroup shares were down 60 cents, or 2.5 percent, at $23.70 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

"It's definitely going to be a show-me story," said Thane Bublitz, a senior analyst at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Citigroup lost nearly $15 billion in the last two quarters, and has suffered more than $45 billion of write-downs and credit losses since last summer, as the housing slump deepened, subprime mortgages imploded and credit markets tightened. More jobs will be cut, on top of 13,200 announced this year.

Scientist to Send fish on rocket ride:

Scientists plan to launch 60 tiny fish on a zero gravity rocket ride from above the arctic circle on monday to try plumb the secrects of motion sickness.
Tomas Hedqvist, project manager for Sweden's Esrange Space Centre, the baby cichlid fish will head 260Km into the ais on an 11-metre two stage rocket,
where they will experience six minuties of weightlessness.

Business software units of Yahoo Inc and Google Inc are introducing beefed-up versions of their Web-based software that compete with Microsoft Outlook, offering yet another clue why Microsoft Corp made a $45 billion unsolicited bid for Yahoo.

While Microsoft views Yahoo as its path into the lucrative Web advertising market dominated by Google, Tuesday's software announcements by Yahoo and Google demonstrate that Microsoft also needs to fend off potential challenges to its business software franchises.

Yahoo's new Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) 5.0 allows users to read Microsoft Outlook e-mail alongside Yahoo Mail or Google's Gmail or Zimbra's own branded e-mail.

In effect, Zimbra's upgrade lets users read work and personal e-mail side by side.

"We really think this is the next generation of Outlook that we are announcing," said Satish Dharmaraj, co-founder and chief executive of Zimbra.

Yahoo paid $350 million in September to buy Zimbra, a provider of e-mail, calendar and contacts software that competes with Microsoft and Google.

Around the same time, Google paid $625 million to acquire e-mail security firm Postini to beef up Google Apps to make it more useful inside businesses. Google Apps, a suite of software that competes with Microsoft Office. counts 500,000 organizational customers and adds 2,000 customers a day.

"We replace the old world of installing software and dealing with security patches and coming in late at night to restart computers," Scott Petry, founder of Postini in 1999 and now a Google product manager, said of his company's impact.

The concept hypersonic jet has been developed by Reaction Engine and it is aptly called the A2. It is a Mach-5 (3,400 mph) wicked aircraft capable of holding 300 passengers and produces, get this, ZERO emissions!

The project has been supplemented in part through funding from the European Union’s Long-Term Advanced Propulsion Concepts and Technologies project, otherwise known in short as (Lapcat). Lapcat is in search for an airliner that can cruise from Brussels to Sydney in less than 4 hours. The A2 can meet the expectations without leaving its footprint behind.

The spidery shape captured is "unlike anything we have seen anywhere in the solar syatem".said mission chief scientist Sean Solomon of the carnegie Institution of Washington.There were also pictures that show some red and blue colored areas on the surface of the planet that is the nearest to the Sun in the solar system.
The last time a NASA craft went to the Mercury was Mariner-10 in 1975.It took pictures of only 45% the planet.
NASA launched the $446 million MESSENGER on its nearly 8-billion Km mission in 2004.It will fly by Mercury two more times, this october and september-2009, berfore settling into its orbit around 2011.

The Australian Cricketers' Association is happy with the handling of the Harbhajan Singh race row, association president Darren Lehmann says.

Despite some Australian players reportedly being furious at Indian spinner Harbhajan being cleared of making racial slur against allrounder Andrew Symonds, Lehmann said the controversy was handled appropriately.

"We are happy with the way it has been treated and handled," Lehmann said.

"That is done and dusted, so let's move on and play some cricket.

"It has all been done in the right channels."

Harbhajan's three Test ban for allegedly calling Symonds a "monkey" was revoked on Tuesday by an International Cricket Council appeals commissioner.

The racial abuse charge against the Indian was downgraded to one of general abuse, to which Harbhajan pleaded guilty. He was fined about $3,000.

Lehmann said he had not spoken to Australian players since Tuesday's outcome.

Harbhajan was banned for three Tests by ICC match referee Michael Procter after verbally clashing with Symonds during the second Test in Sydney earlier this month.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting, as per ICC guidelines, made an official complaint to Procter about Harbhajan's alleged comments.

Asked how Ponting would react to a similar incident in the future, Lehmann said: "I'd have to speak to Ricky, I'm not sure how he'd handle it.

"I presume he'd do the same thing, that is how they have been told to act and he acted accordingly."

Mysterious Woman Figure on Mars

The concept of LIFE ON MARS has been prevailing since ages but this theory has got a dubious boost from recently released photos of the surface of Mars (Taken by NASA's robot SPIRIT).These photos shows a woman like structure parched on rock with her arms outstretched . This news has created a buzz over internet n several sites have zoomed onto the image and suggested the figure could be alive.But astronomers say it is just a rock and it's hard enough to accurately recognize figures and faces across the room. Mars, depending on when you measure it, is about 35 million miles away. The best telescopes aren't of much help in determining surface features, and that's why NASA sent robots with cameras to Mars.
The reason many people see a figure on mars is the same reason that people see faces in clouds, Rorschach blots, and coffee stains. This phenomenon, called pareidolia, is well known in psychology, and it is the cause of many supposedly mysterious and miraculous events
Strong evidence for this psychological explanation lies in the fact that the Spirit image does not look like Martian life (since we don't know what life on Mars looks like), but instead resembles life here on earth specifically human life. The image is the result of human interpretation. If you look around the full image of the area (not just the close-up), you will find several rocks and features that resemble non-human Earth life, such as armadillos and snakes. In the right bottom corner, emerging from the sand, there is what looks like a lizard face wearing goggles and an airman's helmet.
This is of course not the first time that NASA images have been claimed to show evidence of Martian life. A man named Richard Hoagland claimed that 1976 photographs of the Cydonia region of Mars showed a human-like face and was clear evidence on life on earth. NASA still needs to release a confiramtion regarding this issue...

Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday described his 80th international century, which came at the home ground of Sir Don Bradman, a tribute to the Australian legend.

Tendulkar hit an unbeaten 124 on the first day of the fourth and final cricket Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval, which has not been a happy hunting ground for him.

“It hasn’t been a great ground (for me), so I was determined to get a big one,” he said.
“It also happens to be Sir Don’s home ground so I think it was a tribute to Sir Don,” he was quoted as saying by the ‘Australian Associated Press’.

Bradman, who died in February 2001, had in an interview once remarked that the little Indian reminded him of how batted.

Tendulkar was also touched by the Adelaide crowd which congratulated him after the ton.
“It’s truly special and very overwhelming. Sometimes I need to look at the scoreboard to figure out if I’m batting 100 plus or whether I’m on zero, so the ovation has been truly fantastic, it is a special one and it has made my trip very, very special,” he said.

Rafael Nadal found out what Australian Open fans already knew: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is for real.
Tsonga, who won over the crowds with a contagious smile and a go-for-broke style, claimed his biggest victim yet Thursday, dominating second-ranked Nadal in a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 victory that carried Tsonga to his first Grand Slam final.

Feeding off the crowd's energy, even whipping it to a fever pitch like an orchestra conductor, the 38th-ranked Tsonga thrived under pressure, producing what he called his best performance ever.
"It's unbelievable, just amazing," the Frenchman said. "Nothing can stop me today. It's like a dream. I can't believe it's true. I was moving on the court like never I move. Everything was perfect."
No arguments there.
"I was playing fine," Nadal said. "He played unbelievable. Congratulate him."
Tsonga, who beat three top 12 players earlier in the tournament, had never gone beyond the fourth round in his four previous Grand Slams. Now, he will play the winner of Friday's semifinal between top-ranked Roger Federer and No. 3 Novak Djokovic.
On the women's side, fourth-ranked Ana Ivanovic staged a dramatic comeback, losing the first eight games before ousting No. 9 Daniela Hantuchova 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach her second Grand Slam final. She will meet No. 5 Maria Sharapova, who overwhelmed Serbia's Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-1.

TATA's 1lakh CAR

The Nano is here. Ratan Tata seems to have achieved the feat of showcasing to the world a one-lakh rupee car that meets the specs of an international affordable peoples' car. The small beauty claims to meet all the current safety requirements of a modern day car and has pollution levels that are even less than those of a two-wheeler. "Infrastructure is a major concern with India and I accept that we are behind our neighbours in the area. And India is working towards it with a new roads policy. But in the next five year, Tata Motors is only targeting to have 500,000 small cars that will constitute just 2.5 per cent of the total number of passenger vehicles in the country. With those numbers, the small car can hardly be an infrastructure nightmare as it is made out to be," Ratan Tata said unveiling the company's pride at the Auto Expo 08 on January 11 on Thursday. The Nano with a 624 cc engine, will give a mileage of 20 kilometers per liter (50 miles a gallon). As per the safety norms, it has passed the full frontal crash test, the offset and side-crash test to meet the international safety norms. The legroom is expected to be 21 per cent more than Maruti 800. The car meets the Bharat 3 (Euro 4) emission standards. The car that will come in two variants - AC and non-AC, will come at a dealer price of Rs one lakh plus VAT and transport charges. "The car will cost one lakh and only because a promise is a promise," he said brushing aside concerns over cost escalation and increase in raw material prices. However, it needs to be seen, how Maruti Suzuki reacts to the challenge. It’s already offering its Maruti 800 at an ex-showroom price of 1.8 lakh. The winning edge will depend on Nano’s ex-showroom price that would be inclusive of dealer margins, taxes and transportation charges. The actual story is yet to unveil. On road prices of Nano will also include insurance and road tax component. So, the on-road price may actually go much beyond one lakh. For the Tata Motors’ team, this just seems to be the beginning. The company is busy polling its prospective consumers on how best to pack the car with the features desired by most. On the company website, consumers have the option to exercise their choice regarding the air-conditioning, metallic hues, body coloured bumpers, front two power windows, central locking, fog lamps and more. The question, however, is: The consumer will obviously pay more on addition of some of the 26 options that have been included in the survey and can be customized for the consumer later. So will that still be a one-lakh car?
